In the newsroom one day last week, the subject of puppies came up, prompting me to say, as I have said many times to many people, that there is simply nothing better in the entire world than a puppy.
And after saying that, I added, as I usually do, that ranking No. 2 behind puppies are kittens.
Though I wasn’t talking about just their cuteness — though puppies and kittens are incredibly cute — my statements led to a discussion about the cutest things on earth and where human babies would rank on the list.
“Human babies aren’t nearly as cute as puppies or kittens or lots of other baby animals,” I said, referring to newborns and other infants. “I love kids, but babies tend to be wrinkled, misshapen things, and they basically just lie there. If I did a top 7 on the cutest things in the world, human babies maybe — maybe — would check in at No. 7.”
It was agreed that cuteness would make an interesting Top 7 topic, so here we go:
1. Puppies. This particular pup is my dog Shag when he was a little guy, before he grew to in excess of 100 pounds. Sadly, Shag went to "dog heaven" a few years ago.

2. Kittens.

3. Bear cubs.

4. Fawns.

5. Baby elephants.

6. Babby rabbits.

7. Calves.

I think you're right in saying human babies don't make the cute cut in the way animals do, but it depends at least partly on timing. You have to wait about four months for the cute factor to kick in for babies, at least babies that have that factor. I agree, some just plain don't. (I met one 6-month-old boy who was the spitting image of Fred Mertz from "I Love Lucy.")
Now, as for animals, ain't NUTHIN' cuter than a baby panda.
