My son Bob, who just turned 22, has become an avid golfer and overall fan of the sport in the last couple years; like his dad, he plays left-handed; unlike his dad, he plays regularly (I’m sort of on golf hiatus while in the midst of my senior league baseball career, for which I’m just about to start season No. 17).

So big a fan is he that he actually watches tournaments on television — I have him pegged as one of the few 60-and-unders who do that very often — and he just a bought, at Goodwill, a shirt with the Master’s logo on it, even though the shirt was four sizes too small. Since he couldn’t wear it, he framed it and hung it on the wall of his apartment. Whatever. It’s harmless.

And better yet, it also served as inspiration for this week’s list, the Top 7 sports logos:

nba-logo

1. The National Basketball Association, which chose as its emblem the likeness of one of my childhood heroes, Jerry West.

GLF MASTERS LOGO

2. The Masters. Augusta National still seems like a bastion of racism, sexism and elitism to me, but I've got to hand it to whoever designed this logo, because it's fantastic.

NY Yankees Logo

3. The New York Yankees. The interlocking N and Y have basically symbolized major league baseball itself for 90 years.

4. The National Football League. Just has a strong, American look to me.

5. The National Hockey League. Old-school shield and simple, black-and-gold design exudes toughness

6. The New England Patriots former logo. This just always struck me as really clever.

San_Francisco_49ers_logo

7. The San Francisco 49ers. Can't put my finger on why, but this has just always appealed to me.
