As some of you know, I’m an admitted hat nut, both for function (warmth, keeping the sun out of my eyes, preventing the rain from fouling my glasses, etc.) and just because I like how they look.
Depending on where I am, where I’m going and what I’m doing, I’ll typically wear either a baseball hat, a wide-brimmed fedora or what my son Bob refers to a “Scottish sheepherder’s hat.” Also, particularly when I go running on a cold day, I’ll occasionally wear an OSU stocking cap or sometimes an Under Armour skull cap; the latter invariably makes Bob accuse me of having a midlife crisis and trying to look like a wannabe gangsta, but whatever — the UA cap is lightweight and breathable and does a great job of helping the iPod earbuds stay in place.
Fascinating though all that is, it’s merely a run-up, of course, to this week’s list: American pop culture’s Top 7 famous hat wearers:

1. Fess Parker as either Daniel Boone or Davy Crockett (he portrayed both of the coonskin-capped heroes).

2. Paul "Bear" Bryant, legendary football coach of Alabama, Texas A&M and Kentucky. Bryant's houndstooth earns him the nod over another gridiron coaching great, Tom Landry, and his signature fedora.

5. The Man with the Yellow Hat, from the Curious George books. btw, while hunting down this photo, I stumbled onto a very funny blog post from a woman in West Virginia regarding the MWTYH. Check it out.
Here’s a link to the blog.

6. He can't keep up with the archaelogist Jones, who checked in a few notches higher, but "Archie's Pal" definitely deserves his spot on the list.
Honorable mention: Hoss Cartwright, Richard Petty, Jim Brown, Carl Kolchak and Magnum P.I.

Great list. When I saw Gilligan I thought of how we use to try to name Gilligan’s Island episodes.
