One morning last week, my daughter Pam called me with a suggestion for a Top 7.

“Songs with numbers in the titles,” she said.

“That’s not bad,” I said. “But what would I do for an intro? I always write something to say why the list is whatever it is.”

“I don’t know,” she said. “Why don’t you just say you realized today’s date was somebody’s birthday and that got you thinking about the significance of numbers.”

“The significance of numbers?” I said, laughing. “The title could be, ‘Numbers: You can count on them.’”

Or maybe, in a nod to Bob Seger, “Feel Like a Number.”

Well, intelligent intro or no intelligent intro, I decided to take Pam up on her idea so, without further ado, here we go:

1) “Eight Miles High,” the Byrds.

2) “Four and 20,” Crosby, Stills, Nash.

3) “Two of Us,” the Beatles.

4) “5:15,” the Who (edges out “1921″ in this one-song-per-artist list).

5) “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Paul Simon.

6) “867-5309,” Tommy Tutone.

7) “One,” Three Dog Night.

Which transitions us into a bonus Top 7, bands with numbers with in their names (don’t mention it):

1) Ten Years After.

2) Three Dog Night.

3) U2.

4) .38 Special.

5) The Dave Clark Five.

6) The B52s.

7) 3 Doors Down.
