Last weekend’s visit to Seattle included a fair bit of looking around in addition to taking part in the Refuse to Abuse 5K at Safeco Field.

Among the sights taken in was Alki Beach in West Seattle, where my niece Megan lives. I’d never heard of the beach until a few weeks ago when West Seattle was featured in the Sunday Lifestyles section put together by my colleague Wendy Kieffer, and I’d never been to West Seattle until last Friday.

The story made the whole area sound pretty cool, and it definitely was. Lots of cool places to eat, nice neighborhoods, and of course the beach on Puget Sound, which as luck would have it was just a one-mile walk down a wooded trail from my niece’s home.

Here’s Alki Beach at Sunset:

In addition to providing a cool hiking destination, the beach also inspired this week’s list, my Top 7 beaches:

1. Omaha Beach. Stands for all the other Normandy beaches the Allies hit on D-Day.

2. 21 Cove Road, Malibu, home of Jim Rockford.

3. The beach in From Here to Eternity (Halona Cove, Oahu, btw).

4. Kitty Hawk.

5. Gilligan's Island.

6. Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia.

7. Pacific City/Cape Kiwanda, Oregon.

And today’s Catch of the Day, No. 14, a Bill Dickey model catcher’s mitt, circa 1940, that a friend picked up at Rick’s Bargain Shop near Lebanon for a few bucks:
